Not to get all sentimental on a Saturday morning but I had a thought I wanted to share. As you all are beginning to understand, time accelerates as you grow older. In the blink of an eye, you look back at an entire life and can’t believe it all happened so long ago. You wishContinue reading “A note to the kids”

Solomon’s Porch – A Beautiful Collision
Note – This was written in 2008 and originally published in the Monticello News. “The breaking makes a sound I never thought could be so beautiful and loud, fury filledand we collide.” I was listening to David Crowder on my ipod as Hector drove the van up and through the mountains as we left PanajachelContinue reading “Solomon’s Porch – A Beautiful Collision”
The Morning Yard
The little birds make their voices big and command attention as they go about their daily tasks. Hopping along the tree branches and onto the fence, they work their way around the yard. The squirrels scamper along from branch to branch, shaking the evening rain from the tree to the plants below. Somewhere under theContinue reading “The Morning Yard”
Stickers: It’s what they do
This week I worked in the backyard to reclaim my knockout roses from what had become the wilds of the back forty. Over the years, that portion of our yard has been a lot of things but much of the time, it has tended to be what gets a bit wild and out of control.Continue reading “Stickers: It’s what they do”
A Bee Having Breakfast on a Carnival Ride
This morning I saw a bee having breakfast on a carnival ride. In my front yard, there is a wild patch that is in the process of becoming a pollinator garden. It’s not quite there yet, and I imagine it will always be heading somewhere new and never be quite done. Right now it’s aContinue reading “A Bee Having Breakfast on a Carnival Ride”
The Bloom
Sitting day after day in the beauty of the garden. Sad when the flowers fade but trusting they will come again. Do I pick up the fallen branch and hold onto the bloom a little longer? Or do I let it go and rejoice in the joy it has been?
Kids These Days
When I see people my age post stuff like, “I don’t understand kids these days” and “Life was so much better when we were kids” and “Today’s music is awful”, it makes me want to say, “Gag me with a spoon!” (btw – if you remember that phrase then I might be talking to you).Continue reading “Kids These Days”
Don’t stare too long at the ugly.
Often on my morning walk, I pass a little boy on his way to the bus stop. Mostly our conversations center around whether or not the bus has gone by yet as he casually makes his way up the hill. But sometimes, he’ll tell me about something of interest that I should be on theContinue reading “Don’t stare too long at the ugly.”
Gravity and Balance
We have a parenting philosophy that developed somewhere along the way as we were raising our children. What’s funny though is that I don’t think we knew had an official philosophy until after we were done. We always gave our kids boundaries and they typically stayed within them. Now, it’s not that they were perfectContinue reading “Gravity and Balance”
